What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are small tags added to the end of a URL that tell your analytics tools where a visitor came from. They don't change the page someone lands on — they simply travel with the link so each campaign, channel and creative can be measured separately.
Source
Where the traffic comes from — the specific platform, newsletter or partner, such as linkedin, instagram or client-newsletter.
Medium
How the traffic reached you — the channel type, such as social, email, cpc, referral or qr.
Campaign
Which initiative the link belongs to — for example august-launch, spring-promo or webinar-invite.
Term and content
Optional detail. Term usually records a keyword for paid search, while content separates two versions of the same link — for example hero-cta versus footer-cta.
Why tracking links matters
Without tags, every visit looks the same. With them you can see which channel actually produced enquiries, stop spending time on posts that don't convert, and prove which campaigns are worth repeating.
Naming tips
- Use lowercase everywhere — utm values are case sensitive.
- Use hyphens instead of spaces, e.g. august-launch.
- Keep a consistent vocabulary so reports group cleanly over time.
- Shorten the finished link so the tags stay tidy in posts and print.
